The Aptly Named Chester Smith Saxophone Quartet

The Quartet
The entire quartet met as students at Ashland High School, all dedicated musicians. They played in every band possible: Jazz Band, Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Pep-Band, and any other group that would take a sax. The guys had fun playing at AHS, though all four didn't actually play together until the quartet was formed during the summer of 1995 (More information on the formation of the quartet and it's namesake can be found on the History Page).

Afterwards, the quartet members headed off to separate colleges and begun forming very different lives. However, you can still find the quartet playing at Ashland coffee shops, in Lithia Park during their vacations, and performing in the parade with Alex's Gourmet Marching Band.

  • Shawn Evans: alto
    • After graduating the Berklee College of Music with a degree in music therapy, Shawn returned to the west coast and works in an assisted living home putting his education to good use. Shawn arranges and writes compositions for the quartet, and was a founding member of the band, Smidgen. He introduced us all to The Shuffle Demons from which he's drawn some wild solos. The eldest and most experienced of the quartet, he's landed the horrible responsibility of trying to get us together for practice, not to mention gigs!

  • Derek Keevil: baritone
    • Derek graduated Haverford College and got stuck on the East Coast designing web-pages. He has played in the the 13 piece funk experience, Hiram, the Swarthmore Jazz Band, and the Bryn Mawer/Haverford Saxophone quartet. He maintains this web page, and designs and creates the logos and graphics for the quartet.

  • Ko Kuwabara: tenor and soprano
    • Ko's education did not end at Cornell University where he was first chair in the university's Wind Ensemble, played 1st Tenor in the Cornell University Jazz Band, and studied Jazz and sociology (not necessarily at the same time), and dabbled in Ska. He's since moved on to Michigan to study the sociology of the internet. In the past he has directed and played in the bands of Ashland High School as Drum Major and tenor sax wonder. A real jazz afficionado, his CD collection is enormous, yet he's the one always trying to get us to play more classical pieces.
    • Saxophone: Keilwerth Black Gold Tenor

  • Jesse Molloy: alto and tenor
    • Jesse is studying Music Business at Southern Oregon University, played with the excellent ska group 5th Business, and occasionally writes original compositions for the quartet. His jazz is so internal and such a deep part of him, it's difficult to get him to play classical, but give him a swing solo and there's no stopping him!
