Based in Ashland, Oregon, The Aptly Named Chester Smith Saxophone Quartet is an amateur quartet of college students that plays at coffee houses and similar venues in Southern Oregon. The quartet plays several tunes by Lennie Neihaus, but their repetoire ranges from Dixieland and Ragtime to Mozart and Bach. They also play some original compositions and arrangements created by various quartet members.

Who is the strange man in this blurry photograph? Could it be Chester Smith himself? Actually, it's a morph of all four of the quartet members into a single entity... If we could do this in real life, it would make it a lot easier to find practice times when the whole quartet could make it! |
These are extremely rare clips from the famous July 1995 "Miserable" recording session. The members were hot, tired, but knowing it would be their last time together for months, they chose some of the very first songs they had ever played together. Somehow it worked. Somehow, in the well over 100 degree studio (garage) in Ashland, Oregon they managed to crank out a few listenable recordings. This was the last session recorded by the group before they split up that fall, each member heading to a different section of the country. The group continues to play when members return home, and as more recordings become available they will be posted here.
