Chester Smith
I used to list all my CD's on my website with the thought that it would be a quick glimpse into my personality, but after a few years of my CD-buying addiction, it became less like a glimpse and more like a research project. Here are some of my favorites from my prefered genres.
R.E.M.
Automatic for the People
Listened to this a lot in high school, but it's greatness is only beginning to really sink in. They hit the perfect balance between their "alternative" roots and tendancy to rock. They craft marvelously melodic songs with mesmerizing lyrics.
Miles Davis
Kind of Blue
When I first started playing jazz, we made fun of the incredible simplistic melody in "So What." In truth that's just part of what's so amazing about it. The influence of Miles' playing over the styles of Coltrane and Cannonball is beautiful.
Pink Martini
Sympathique
Latin-influenced old nightclub type stuff, with a little Django Reinhardt thrown in for good measure. Yet their twist on the songs are poigniant - a haunting version of "Que Sera Sera" plus the disturbing "Brazil" with visions of Terry Gilliam.
Rockwell Church
Warm up the Gong
Acoustic folk from the guy's perspective. Joti's talent on the guitar (And everything else) combined with Nathan's distinctive lyrics make a pleasurable listen. They just released a new album, but this EP is still my favorie.
Gerry Mulligan
Dream a Little Dream
I started playing sax before I even liked jazz. When playing the baritone sax you have to listen to Mulligan, and I was hooked. This is a great, later album, with a more up-tempo version of his west-coast sound.
The Beatles
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
The first CD I ever owned, and even amongst all the other magnificient Beatles albums it shines. Nothing really to say here that hasn't already been said. If you don't own it, you should.
Royal Crown Revue
Mugzy's Move
I heard this by chance before knowing there was such a thing as a swing-revival, and I couldn't get enough. These are the masters of the genre: very hard swinging stuff.
Paul Simon
Graceland
One of the best all-around good albums. Not a bad song on here. Throw in a little nostalgia for my childhood with the South-African inspired sound and it's perfect.
